Rental Procedure Overview:
Fleet cars are booked on a first come first served basis. We recommend booking at least 1 week in advance. Contact us if you want to make a reservation less than 2 days in advance.
- Our fleet includes sedans and minivans. We do not have 4WD, SUV, or 15 passenger vehicles (for cost and insurance reasons).
- Drivers must be a University employee or student at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license (from US or Canada).
- Driver and passengers must be on official University business in order to rent a vehicle.
- Drivers will be required to present their driver’s license upon picking up the vehicle.
- Hours of vehicle key pick up are between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. Keys can be returned after hours in the key drop box near the door to the pool car lot.
- If you need a vehicle for someone that is NOT a UMD/UMN employee/student, please contact us.
Current Fleet Rates:
5 hours or less: $14
5-24 hours: $20
Weekly (5 days): $80
Weekly (6-7 days): $88
Monthly (min 1200 miles): $288
Per mile charge (includes gas):
Sedan: .30/mile
Minivan: .39/mile
Fuel: there is a fuel card in each Fleet vehicle. The fuel is charged to the fleet program, not your rental as fuel is included in the per mile rate.
These rates make it cheaper to use Fleet vehicles for many common travel needs. A frequent example is a one day round trip to the TC campus. Taking a sedan from fleet will cost approximately $122. If someone drove their personal vehicle, this same trip would cost their department approximately $223 (at 65.5 cents per mile).

Returned vehicle dirty - $25
Didn't refill gas - $25
Didn't complete rental form - $25
Cancelled less than 24 hours in advance - $25
Parking ticket - $25 plus cost of ticket
Accident - $500 or cost of repair, whichever is less
iPass: UMD Fleet now has an iPass! This works wherever iPass or EZ Pass are accepted. This includes tollways through Chicago as well as the tollways through Indiana & Ohio. The use of the iPass is free and tolls are charged automatically to the rental CFS. Please request the iPass in the “Special Requests” area of the reservation form.
